I am not sure what happened with them, but after they got bought out (or changed name) someone decided to lower the product quality. Many of use use these not only to drown out noisez, but also aid in sleep. We prefer the mechanical versions over electrical because the white noise is truly non descript (no pattern the brain focuses on), and it has a soothing sound. These are so shoddy kn construction that you can hear the motor whine of the device! It's pretty aweful. It's light enough that it's clearly part of the design, but I know it's on from across the room (not the fan but a higher pitched motor whine). My original dohm doesn't so this. Also, my original had a foam on the bottom. For absorption and preventing dust entering the device, this one has neither. Someone is milking a once great brand for money (obviously), but doing so with a lesser quality product (that's the 'you should be embarrassed this is your job in life part '). Stay wat if you can, don't reward companies that do this
