I'm computer savvy, for example I'm a computer engineer. This software won't install - and I really don't want to go through the Windows registry to find out why. So I can't say if the quilting program is any good, which is a shame because a) it was expensive and b) my Christmas present and c) something I'd really like to play with. FIX: If the installation fails, the program doesn't clean itself up properly, which means a regedit session is required. It turns out that for some reason the "EBR" file format used by EQ8 was associated with Adobe Photoshop (which I don't own or have installed) on my computer, which seems to be the cause of the failed installation. Resetting ALL file extensions to default, deleting ALL HKEY EQ8 and two reboots (the second one for luck) did the trick and it installed. Now I need to reset all file extensions to my liking. This could be the Using a Mac tutorial. PRODUCT USE: I finally had a few days to play and keep 3 stars. First, it's amazing software. It is accompanied by extensive blogs, tutorials, and tips and tricks from the ElectricQulit website. Importing fabrics is very easy, including copying files/images from manufacturers' websites and photos of materials taken at your quilt shop audition. If you want to try quilting fabrics, that's great, especially if you can't get to a quilt store and can only order online. If you want to create quilts from a library of blocks, this is great. I like to create more modern quilts that aren't based on traditional blocks and I don't know how to do that with EQ8. I tend to have strips and blocks that don't always align neatly and because of the way the EQ8 performs the print/export function I still need to pre-position my blocks for measurements and plots so they can be reproduced as blocks into EQ8. I was hoping to skip the spreadsheet step and go straight from pen and paper sketches to the EQ8, but I don't see that. I will continue to use spreadsheets for quilt layout including dimensions, block layout, assembly and assembly. The instructions themselves also run outside of EQ8 (regardless of the type of quilt/block layout), meaning my flow would be: Inspiration->Pen and Paper->Spreadsheets->EQ8 for Color Hearing->Spreadsheets and Word Documents. If you're running within the EQ8 parameters and expected usage, it's almost certainly 4-5 stars (depending on your setup experience and how comfortable you are with making the instructions yourself).
