Many of the reviewers here say you can set it up as a "steam" humidifier on your smart thermostat, but trust me, that's not enough. I hooked it up to hot water and tested the idea and ran my fan non-stop for days with no significant increase in humidity. When looking at the humidity logs in the Ecobee System Monitor, a sharp increase in humidity is only clearly visible during the oven warm-up phase (see attached steam and humidity performance images). The rest of the time is wasted energy and lots of water. If its always cold and you have a lot of heat then this humidifier is great and has no problem with condensation and ice on your windows (if set too high) on 2500m2. ft. house. If you still need more moisture in the warmer seasons (when you probably don't need heat), you need to use a steam humidifier. This is probably true of all evaporative humidifiers and is not a disadvantage of this particular unit. Currently, our home in Colorado Springs appears to have an average maximum relative humidity of twenty or low thirty percent on warm winter days. I would like to go higher, but I don't want to work harder to get there. I will most likely be switching to a steam humidifier in a year or two. The device itself is a decent device that is very easy to install and use, especially with a smart thermostat. I connected it to my Ecobee3 with an ACC+ cable on one end and then connected to C on the other end. I don't have AC so I was able to remap one of the 5/18 wires for it without having to run additional T-Stat wires in the walls. Frost Control 3's window efficiency has been a good balance for my house to prevent windows from condensing when the outside temperature is below 0 degrees.
