They completely prevent the mask from being sucked into the mouth and nose. They don't scratch but are uncomfortable. I work in a restaurant and the masks soak up the oil and then your face marinates in oil all day. This will prevent oil from getting on your face. I don't know if it's just my face shape, but I actually find it more comfortable to wear it backwards. I only wear them to work, otherwise I don't take them.
