I started doing fitness hikes regularly last August. Since then I've ridden nearly 400 miles and relied on them for most of those miles. Some kind of trekking pole is needed, especially if you're a clumsy guy like me! I very rarely notice them. This has only happened a couple of times and ONLY after I tangled the bars in something that catches on the baskets and makes the bar spin. What follows is not a sudden collapse, but one of the poles is gradually shortened. If I get tangled up in the undergrowth, I can quickly check that the segments are secure. I've put quite a bit of weight on them, climbed snowy hills and jumped small streams. As other reviewers have pointed out, I didn't see any of the anti-shock features I did. However, I find they work great just the way they are. Some people have mentioned that the straps aren't adjustable enough. I have very small wrists and have had no problems with it. I use them by sliding my hand through the strap in a direction away from my body. I then twist my wrist to bring my hand back to my body over the strap. The strap then goes under my wrist and goes between my thumb and fingers. All of the weight is on my wrist and forearm, not my fingers. I can swing the bar easily and hardly have to hold it. While the straps may not adjust perfectly, there are options to use them that are suitable for those with small hands/wrists. The general gist of the previous reviews here is "good sticks for beginners" and I totally agree. Of course, you can get more sophisticated and expensive poles, but they're fine if you're just starting out and have never used trekking poles before. They are good value for money. They increased my stride length, decreased my minutes per mile and gave me confidence to tackle slippery and steep terrain. I would recommend them to anyone looking to start a day hike.
