Leaks like crazy when 'off'

I bought this because my other shower head leaks too much when the valve is closed. This one is even worse. When the valve is closed, a lot of water comes out. We use outdoor showers and don't have access to hot/cold handles when showering, so we need a working shut-off valve. The product is not suitable for this. I suppose if you don't bother with the check valve it works fine, but then what's the point of having a valve?
