Description says 'Perfect applicator for all wood stains and finishes. , Shellac, Tung Oil, Furniture Polish, Wax". However, I used this with "Varathane: Classic Penetrating Wood Stain" (a petroleum-based Rustoleum product sold at Home Depot), and about 10 minutes after Staining went wrong bare wood works great this is my go for staining this applicator pad worked really well for the first 10 minutes or so too but then I started seeing sticky stains of paint all over the door I was staining. I had to stop and find a way to remove the drips which was a chore and a nuisance. Luckily it didn't mess up the staining process. Some research has shown that the pad's foam core dissolved along with the oil-based stain and this sticky drips formed.This swab IS NOT compatible with solvents despite the description but if you use it with a water based stain you will probably like it.
