Review on Cisco Charcoal πŸ“ž CP-9971-C-K9 Unified VoIP 9971 Phone by Raye Johnson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great next-gen phone but not as powerful as it could be.

The Cisco 9971 is an advanced telephony solution designed to integrate with the Cisco Unified Communications infrastructure. It also works with the Cisco Call Manager Express product in a smaller space. The phone is equipped with a high-resolution color touchscreen and multiple physical function keys for all necessary call functions. Connection is via a Gigabit RJ-45 connector with Power Over Ethernet (POE) support. An additional connection for a PC or printer is provided by a second RJ-45 connector, although this connector is not powered. Optionally, you can connect your phone to a 48V adapter and use your phone with Wi-Fi when wired Ethernet isn't available. The phone also has two USB ports, one of which is said to be for the camera. The camera feature is easy to use during a call, and you can "mute" the camera so the other person can't see you. Bluetooth is also available so you can use wireless headsets with your phone and it works well. Despite the number of buttons on the screen, you actually only have six line buttons. The buttons on the right are functional and don't remap lines or speed dial, which is really disappointing. The phone can also be a bit sluggish at times, which isn't a comforting thought, but I've never had a phone crash or anything like that. For brave folks wanting to use these phones outside of the Cisco environment, this can be programmed to work with SIP PBX applications like Asterisk. However, functionality is limited and I've found that video resolution suffers - although that may have changed since I've tried it.

Pros
  • Firmware support for XML and Java midlet applications. Requires Cisco Unified Communications Manager (sold separately). Does not work with 3rd party VOIP systems.
Cons
  • Style 90
