These garters face the mantel and hold up well with just one force. If your mantel is thick, or you have a garland in the front like ours, an outward force will be exerted on the arm of the lever, which will fall down and part of the bracket will just slide off (the stockings will fall off when the kids tap it - but at least I don't have to worry about the garter belt breaking). The holder holds well as long as the force is straight down. As a side note, the hook can be rotated 360 degrees but prefers to go inwards towards the mantel so the weight is directly under the top round part.
