I've been using a Netgear SPH200D (base station and telephone) and an extension telephone (SPH150D) for about a year. Essentially, the device implements Skype and adds traditional telephony features as an add-on. The Netgear interface is an artfully stripped down version of Skype for desktop. The documentation got me going; Trial and error taught me more. I only use Netgear for Skype calls and when combined with a Skypeout subscription ($3/month) I can call any phone in the US or Canada at no extra charge. I put frequently used phone numbers in my Skype contact list - Netgear knows how to use Skype for those calls. Skype sound quality has improved significantly over the year. After assigning the Netgear base station a static IP address on my network (instead of the default DHCP), the phone connected to the Skype servers faster. A static IP address is useful for accessing the device's web page, checking the configuration and updating the firmware. It took me a while to discover Netgear's more advanced features. While the device is nice, I'm only giving it 4 stars because the documentation isn't entirely clear, even with the basic setup. For example, "press" on the base station can mean "press and hold." To Netgear's credit, the tech support rep I eventually contacted was knowledgeable.
