You can work around this limitation by using a switch as the SPST and an alternate side port to access and control the LED cathode independently. Similarly, for those that switch 12V, you don't need a DPST. Apply 12V to one side (the pin selected will determine if the LED is always on or just on, and connect GND to the pin on the other side, but it must be connected to the pin that connects to the LED .As long as you keep 12V on one side and GND on the other without having to move the wires around until the configuration you want is found.
