Review on πŸƒ ALTRA Superior 4 Men's Trail Running Shoe by John Vann

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Escalante's softer off-road cousin

I still have a pair of Superior 3.0's which I mainly look at as they are nearing the end of their lives. I chose 4.0 in comparison. The 4.0 looks more like a street shoe than a trail shoe. The exterior has been completely redesigned and is now made from a more stretchy material. Although I initially found it comfortable, it seemed the longer it was on my leg the more it stuck to my leg. This was a downside for me as I like my shoes to be a bit loose and feel like they can breathe. The sole of Altra Ego is very soft and elastic. This improved the shoe's flexibility, but it's a bit too soft for my taste. One of the things I liked about the 3.0 was that the sole was a bit stiffer than, for example, on the Escalantes that I used to run on the street. I always wanted the Escalante to be a bit closer to the Superior in that sense, but instead the Superior is now closer to the Escalante. Traction has never been an issue with the 3.0, even in the wettest of conditions, and it looks like they can still handle it. Ultimately, I settled on the more minimalistic barefoot shoe with the Merrell Trail 4 gloves, which feel comparable in width at the toe but offer a much stiffer ride.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have gone for a newer model
