Review on Enhanced Performance with POWERTEC Drilling Cobalt Collar 8 Inch by Tim Harrington

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Inexplicable inaccuracy

Update: -1 star. Having made several tongue and groove connections I can say it's pretty good when it works. But it's those inexplicable things that really annoy me when I'm building a joint and all three marks are off by 1/16th of an inch. But 1/3 of the time the joints don't fit. The only way I've found is to cut off the side dowel pins to get the board in place. Other reviewers I join in complaining about the loose fit of the drill bit in the dowel jig. There is a little room for the chisel to wobble. The clear plastic feels hard but is a little more flexible than I would like. When drilling from the side, the weight of the drill can cause the guide to deviate slightly from the workpiece. In combination with a loose guide block, this can actually lead to int The guide block is steel, it will be a little heavy and unbalanced, so be careful when loosening the bracket, otherwise it may fall off and don't hold on. I like the clamp/stop block for the drill. It has no set screw to cut directly into the drill bit itself. Instead, it twists the clamp together/tighter, creating more contact area around the bit to grip. All in all it seems like good value for something that you can press firmly against a workpiece. I just wish there was a design with a higher build quality that wouldn't break the bank - maybe in the $40-$50 range. Manufactured from fiberglass reinforced nylon with a rigid guide block.

Pros
  • Sturdy design
Cons
  • Boring packaging
