The backrest is right next to the seat, so there isn't enough space for the backrest, so to speak. The picture shows the backrest over the seat that I needed for my tailbone pain. No contact with anything, so that's deceptive. We also had to knock out the plastic pieces in the back assembly so we could connect the backrest to the chair. The shape of the seat is unusual, making it very difficult to lean back in the seat. Besides, it's just great. :-)
