Review on Panasonic RF P50D Pocket Silver RF P50D by Tory Richardson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent reception - and the dial even glows in the dark

There are dozens of pocket radios here at Revain. This is one of the best. The Panasonic RF-P50D offers excellent reception on both AM and FM and sounds very good for a radio of this size. As a unique and useful detail, the dial even glows in the dark, just like the dial of a glow-in-the-dark watch. This radio looks almost identical to an early version of the Panasonic pocket radio that shares the same model number as this one, except the earlier model didn't have a "D" at the end of the model number. This was suitable for local stations, but had very poor reception from outside stations. This revised model has greatly improved reception, especially on AM. I compared it to a small Sony ICF-P26 pocket radio. Sound quality is the same, but this Panasonic is noticeably better at handling weak signals on both AM and FM. Compared to some other manufacturers pocket radios in this general price range - well there really isn't a comparison but many of them cost as much or more than this Panasonic. Here you will get reception close to that of large portable devices. It's hard to find in any pocket radio, let alone at this price point. The afterglow Tuning Wheel collects energy from the ambient light in the room, then glows for a short time when the room goes dark. It's a nice touch and useful for tuning in to the radio in bed. However, if the radio has been in the dark for a long period of time, e.g. For example, in a desk drawer, purse, or tote bag, the face must be exposed to light for about a minute for the backlight feature to work. Work. To complete the vintage pocket radio feel, Panasonic even includes one-ear headphones with this radio. My uncle, who died many years ago, was a night watchman in a factory and always carried a pocket radio to keep him company all night listening to talk shows through the same old-fashioned headphones. And since they only fit in one ear, the wearer is safer with the ear open to hear what's going on around them. The old way is not always worse. My unofficial observation is that the battery life is excellent. Panasonic's specifications in the owner's manual that came with the radio indicate that the radio can run on 2 AA batteries for 64 hours on the FM band or 68 hours on the AM band. Obviously, this test is performed at a specific volume level and duty cycle. In real life, batteries last longer when the radio is played at lower volumes (or through headphones) and with shorter usage cycles. If you play the radio at high volume for hours, the batteries will drain faster. This is the best choice among small pocket radios. Easy to use, good sound, great reception, free retro headphones and a glow-in-the-dark dial.
