Lamps can be anything, great cheap LED lamps. The problem is that with these (5 inches) they include a plastic jug for tracing and cutting a hole in the ceiling. They must have given me those for the big lanterns because all the light goes through the hole. I used a hole saw that matched the size of the jig. So make sure you don't trust the instructions or the jig and I think you'll be fine.
