Review on NAD Hybrid Digital Integrated Amplifier by Patrick Nepal

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Pretty good sound for the money

I have a bunch of amps: Quad Tube, Music Fidelity Class A, SMSL Class D, that's NAD. Of course I like tubes best, but they get hot, I don't have air conditioning, my rooms aren't very big, so I don't like using them that much in the summer. The same goes for Music Fidelity. SMSL are good in terms of warming. However, the sound does get a bit tiring after a while (I prefer the SA36 over the SA50 but have seen opposing opinions). So I wanted Class D but with better sound than the $60 SMSL. Does NAD deliver it? Yes. No complaints about the sound, not as smooth as the tubes but not as expensive either and probably the best hit for $. One downside is the tiny remote control, the other is not quite clear how loud the volume is set due to the LEDs on the front, the old-fashioned potentiometer with a recess works better. The worst thing for me is that it switches to Blue Tooth input at random times. I found out now - happens when I get an email or a text message on my computer. Now maybe my computer is to blame or maybe Nad's either way it's a real agony listening to a CD through the AUX input and then all of a sudden it's silent because I switch to bluetooth. (Yes, I know I can turn off Bluetooth on my computer, but sometimes I just want to stream internet radio in the background, and other times I want to listen to analog inputs). Also, that's not reflected in the number of stars in the rating, if you look inside, the internal layout is kind of a mess and it's not about the "clean" class D (heats but not hot), maybe that is the reason for the sound is good. One look at SMSL - they are very clean.
