Review on Effortlessly Print, Scan, And Plot With The Epson SureColor T3170M 24" Multifunction Printer & Plotter by Russ Freeman

Serious printer for multiple uses

This is a substantial investment for most small businesses or perhaps for personal use for those who require a large format printer. I'll preface my review by stating that (a) I have only used the printer with wired Ethernet (not wireless), (b) I have only printed from and tested with A360, AutoCAD DWG Viewer, and AutoCAD LT, (c) I printed primarily architectural and engineering line drawings (aka building and electrical design plans) as well as network drawings. There are MANY potential print applications with differing quality and speed needs and many software packages that I did not use with this printer.I'm coming from an HP InkJet printer (also D size) which worked great for years, but recently had a failed Ethernet network card. The GREAT NEWS IS THAT THE hundreds of dollars of have invested in paper rolls (HP branded) can be used on this printer with great results. This includes universal paper, coated paper, and bond paper. I was not 100% sure when ordering this Epson, but I can confirm the paper works fine and the printer has settings appropriate for the paper. It is definitely EASIER to load this than the HP. The HP requires pushing the paper in, opening lever, then closing lever down on paper. Here, just load the paper. The one oddiity -- on first startup I correctly loaded the paper. It didn't like the paper was loaded for fresh startup, so I had to unload and reload. It's initial setup (not including my time to unpack, setup, and load ink and paper) was 18 minutes according to its own clock.Out of the gate it got DHCP over wired Ethernet with no problem. My iMac found the printer with no problem at all. The printer can auto configure or be hard set to HP-GL format. It prints D size prints incredibly fast. Well well under 1 minute in normal print. There is a faster print mode (draft) with lower quality and higher quality (fine) print modes that can be set from the panel on the printer, from some apps, and from the operating system dialog box if that is used.I actually could not get A360 to properly print ARCH D no matter what I tried. That said, I had no problems with ARCH D for the exact same drawing from Autodesk Viewer. (Note that I didn't try TrueView the DWG only Autodesk viewer-- but I expect it would be the same ass Autodesk Viewer). Autodesk Viewer views DWG and other formats .There are limited print options from the free viewers. Not surprisingly the results on margin controls, alignment, and scale are far better with the app than the browser based viewers. I still have not gotten the scaling exactly right (which is very very important for ARCH drawings to be used for building). The printer is manual set at the panel for metric or English (not language which is a separate setting -- but units of measurement aka inches/feet). I have it set for English (inches/feet) and accordingly want to use ARCH D instead of ANSI D. With some additional tries I'm confident I can get the scaling right (always best to check).I actually found the blended colors (red, green blue -- that are not pure CMYK) to be a bit less saturated than the HP (just being honest here).Overall I'm really impressed. This is incredibly more quiet, faster, smaller, and cheaper than the HP. With additional fine tuning and learning the settings I can improve the printer quality and still have better speed. My overall impression so far is that this uses MORE ink than the HP, but given that the Epson ink is cheaper (per milliliter) and the other benefits I think it is worth it.I hope to update this review if I find anything else to share as I use it more heavily.
