Yes, you need to loosen up and arrange the branches. Don't be discouraged when you receive your tree and tape its branches together. The product page and accompanying physical instructions make this very clear. I bought my tree in April 2019 and there was no writing on the pot. First my complaints. The "bark" of my tree is almost pink, not the dark brown shown in the product photo. It looks real pink than in my photos. It reminds me more of a piece of coral than a tree. "Grass" is simply green color, with no effort to conform to the contours of the "roots". The hot glue holding the wire branches in place is pretty obvious. Aside from that, I bought cheap faux foliage from the model/diorama section of the hobby store and superglued it on. I think even that small touch has greatly improved the overall appearance of quality. I also had the idea of painting with some water thinned paint to make the tree more brown and putting everything in a bigger pot to create more scenery but I didn't have time for that. My takeaway from this product is that it helps to think of it more as a base that you can customize and expand upon.
