The original strap lasted more than 3 years. I don't like the rubber strap because it doesn't breathe, but the watch comes with it. This is an exact replacement for the original strap. I was able to remove the pins with an awl and a small flathead screwdriver - tried both and both worked. The pins go deeper into the watch case than others I've worked with, but being more secure is a good thing! Yes, it took a bit of fiddling to get them out, but not so much that I deducted a star for it. I would describe this effort as "patient determination". As another reviewer mentioned keep the pens as this product is just a strip, no pens.
