Review on πŸ“· NIKON NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S Telephoto Zoom Lens - Ideal for Nikon Z Mirrorless Cameras by Brandon Patterson

Excellent image quality and autofocus performance - well worth the wait

I've always hesitated to buy a 70-200 f/2.8 zoom lens for a DSLR given the size and weight. The Nikon Z6 is much lighter than a DSLR, so it was decided to pair it with a 2.8 zoom. The 24-70 2.8 S was the reason I switched to Nikon mirrorless cameras and has been the only lens on the Z6 since day one. After a long wait, the 70-200 2.8 S is finally available. In short, this is another great lens in the Nikon S family. I don't mind that it's made in Thailand and comes with a US warranty card in the box. I have found in the past that a larger lens (e.g. 85mm 1.4g, 24 1.4g) has smoother, clearer and more vibrant colors than a 50mm 1.8g lens which is pin sharp . 24-70 2.8 S and this new 70-200 2.8 S have imagery similar to a 1.4g lens, very smooth, very transparent, bright but not overly bright, and noticeably sharper across the frame when fully open, and even without purpura. edge area! As expected, this lens is capable of producing an attractive, creamy, out-of-focus background. I love Nikon's color science (I'll never part with my D700 and 105DC) and the design of the lens. As with the 24-70 2.8 S, the image quality of this 70-200 2.8 S+Z6 is more artistic than just perfect/factual. Autofocus is even faster than the 24-70 2.8S in photo mode, just as quiet in video mode. This lens can focus very quickly on the Z6 with the latest firmware. It feels like the Z6 hasn't fully exploited its autofocus capabilities just yet. I found I used the close focus of 0.5m at 70mm a lot more than I thought I would, especially indoors. I like the 2nd function button and the 2nd function button is assigned as AF-On from the factory but can be changed to other functions such as B. On-off tracking can be changed. On the Z6 it's well balanced, to save weight I chose to remove the battery grip as the main weight is on the lens itself, but I'll probably keep the tripod ring on the lens. I will be holding the tripod collar in my left hand and it will be a very good support for the lens and camera. Also, with a tripod collar, my fingertips land comfortably next to the zoom ring and second function buttons. The collar has a smooth contour and I suspect this was a handcrafted design. The zoom ring and the focus ring are well padded and react even in sub-zero temperatures. I like that the lens doesn't retract or extend, although that's because it's long and heavy. Just over the test I didn't notice any obvious focal breathing, which is very pleasant. However, after changing the focal length, the lens needs to be refocused slightly. Since I usually check focus before shooting, this isn't a problem. I redesigned the inside of the Think Tank Retrospective 20 V2.0 bag to fit the 70-200 S+Z6 diagonally for a better fit of the telephoto lens and also easy on and off. The total weight of this combination + bag is bearable. One more thing, VR works well for handheld stills, I can take a sharp photo at 200mm with a 1/6 shutter speed. I think the camera knows if it's on a tripod and sets up VR accordingly, so I rarely touch the IBIS setting and always leave it on. This lens has a recessed glass element near the camera end so it can work with a Z teleconverter. There are reviews of the new Z x1.4 saying it doesn't sacrifice much in terms of focus speed/accuracy and image quality, maybe it's worth it yourself to add it in the future. Compared to the short telephoto lenses I own, this lens offers more compositional flexibility as well as faster autofocus to capture the moment. In summary, this is a lens that can provide years of exceptional and reliable performance in the field. Very happy with the purchase direct from Revain.com.
