First of all, given the price, you really shouldn't look anywhere else for a filter. This is 100% the best bang for your buck. I have axolotl so I only use sponge filters. I bought it 2 years ago and one day it stopped working. I figured it was only $8 and lasted 2 years so I bought another one. Well I figured out my problem and now I have filter performance for several days! First check the pipes and air pump. Make sure all hoses are clean, open and having a good flow with no filter attached. Now disassemble the filter, it should break into about 7 pieces including 2 sponges. Clean the sponges in the remaining aquarium water. Clean the remaining parts with an aquarium brush. Here's the kicker. Pay special attention to the part of the body that has the smaller hose attached where you will be attaching the hose. Inside the case at the bottom is a ring of small holes through which air flows. Brush these things very well with a brush until you can see them. I've attached an image of the part you want to focus on. This solved my problem, I hope it can solve yours too :)
