I bought these two trays because they were very cheap. After reading MANY reviews of similar products where customers complained about a "white coating" after use, I did a little research. The white precipitate is actually calcium sulfate, meaning the residue is mostly due to chemicals in hard water. Like a mineral deposit. Minerals from the water will calcify and adhere to the walls of the silicone, and are then transferred to the surface of the next ice cube. The easiest way to clean is with vinegar or a CLR cleaner. I used about 1 tablespoon of CLR and rubbed it over the tray with my fingers. It took about 30-60 seconds, then I rinsed in the sink to find the surface clean, shiny and ready to use. This is a common problem with silicone cookware, so don't be afraid to think this is an odd novelty. My only criticism is: I wish the cubes were a bit bigger. Real cubes measure just under 2 x 2 x 2 inches. I wish it was more like 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 inches.
