Recent studies over the past few weeks have revealed the potential harm that overexposure to blue light can cause, including headaches, eyestrain, insomnia and permanent damage to an area of the retina called the macula and to the macula leads to degeneration. I had an uncle with macular degeneration. This made him blind. For the past few years, I've had insomnia after surgery, but only for three months in a row. Headaches used to be rare. I thought the eyestrain was due to the increasing amount of time I spent on computers for my career. It never occurred to me that my economic move of replacing ALL light bulbs in my house with LEDs, my increased computer time, my smartphone use could have anything to do with insomnia, headaches and eyestrain. I also noticed a decrease in visual acuity at night and a large greenish square in the center of my field of vision just after all the lights went out, before trying to find my way to bed. Then I read an article about insomnia in Consumer Reports. I have orange glasses over the prescription to block blue light. I used them regularly at night for computer work and TV and it helped. Then I moved. Somewhere, with every movement, things get lost. My blue and orange glasses were lost. Then I had a major operation. After the operation, the usual insomnia set in. And it didn't work. The headache started. Night vision deteriorated. My blood pressure has gotten dangerously high. High power. Not my idea of fun. Then I read two more articles, one in a medical journal and one online, specifically about the effects of excessive blue light on the body, especially the eyes. I ordered blue light goggles and computer monitor covers for myself and my entire family. The orange ones don't fit. If not used, they will not work. So I ordered these Gameking Classic Blue Light Blocking Clip-on/Flip-up computer glasses and similar cases for computer monitors. They arrived yesterday and I put them on right away. I felt the tension in my eyes go away almost immediately. My headaches went away without medication. Last night, after all the lights went out and the computer was off, I went to bed in a darkened house without that horrible greenish square spot in front of me so I didn't have to grope my way down the hall. I could actually find my way in the moonlight, just like when I was a kid. I slept very well. We'll have to wait and see if the blood pressure improves. But I have hope.
