By itself - weak and shaky. Reinforced - excellent.

This is a good shelf but NOT good on its own. Even bolted to the cleats both shelves wobbled slightly and couldn't sit flush with the cat who is only a 10 week old kitten. I wouldn't trust that on a full sized cat. I ended up buying shelf brackets from Home Depot and screwing them on just in case they wouldn't budge. Sure, it doesn't have the same seamless, floating shelf look, but they're functional and they don't look terrible. Just not as neat as I hoped when I bought them.
