The brackets built into the back of the shelves are not enough to support the weight of the shelf AND the cat without leaving the wall.

This is suitable for very fat cats, although smooth. I used a small bath mat to create a cat grip that also allows for easy washing.

We ended up having to put a brace under this shelf to make it sturdy enough for our cats to be comfortable on. Without a bracket (only one in the middle) it sagged a bit. I'm sure he wouldn't have survived over time. The shelf itself looks high quality and attractive, the fittings just didn't fit our wall.

I am very happy with this shelf. It's big enough for a big cat and looks great. It has a nice smooth glossy finish and feels very strong and durable. One caveat - it's heavy and probably won't fit well anywhere on drywall. You'll need to make sure it's attached to at least one bobby pin so it can withstand the kitten's weight as well as the downward force of the kitten's leaps.

This is a good shelf but NOT good on its own. Even bolted to the cleats both shelves wobbled slightly and couldn't sit flush with the cat who is only a 10 week old kitten. I wouldn't trust that on a full sized cat. I ended up buying shelf brackets from Home Depot and screwing them on just in case they wouldn't budge. Sure, it doesn't have the same seamless, floating shelf look, but they're functional and they don't look terrible. Just not as neat as I hoped when I bought them.

I have two of these and one of the round design shelves for my cat to stand up at a great discount at Petco. I got all three shelves for less than $20 and wouldn't recommend paying more. The wall mounting system without a support bracket on the underside is interesting, but still not reliable enough. During installation, I replaced the 3" screws with the ones I had since the head of one of them broke driving it into the wall. I've used a spike finder so I know they're as secure as I can get…

I liked how cheap these shelves are. Other cat shelves can be overpriced. It was delivered quickly and looks like a quality shelf. Why only 2 stars. The shelf is HEAVY! Very heavy, probably heavier than my two cats combined. It's also very slippery. I put my cat on it and she slid and slid everywhere.
