I thought they were solid metal but they're hollow tubes. I think I missed this information? There are a lot of people in our house and a lot of pants so in an attempt to pack and fit in the family closet I bought two sets of ten, each individually wrapped and smelling funny. I took some rubbing alcohol and wiped them off and the white rag was black but the smell was gone so maybe some production residue or a protective coating? They work well with lighter pants, but if you take heavier jeans (the main part of our pants) they will bend a bit but not rip yet. My husband is 6ft 2in so his pants are heavy. I can only wear a pair of jeans, pants and a pair of lightweight shorts and the hanger sags a bit.
