My water softener bypass valve started leaking and I wanted to replace it. I ruined the new one by screwing the metal water fitting onto the plastic thread of the bypass. Since I already had bypass valves on the copper lines, I figured these separate fittings might work, and if I messed up at least one, at least I wouldn't have to replace both. I didn't cross a thread either and they worked great. (Of course, with that I lost the bypass ability, which I didn't need anyway.) Also, looking at it now, I could probably just replace the o-rings on my first leaking valve, but if it wasn't for that it was one great and cheaper alternative.
