Spoilers: I liked Gold Toe the best! I wear white cotton socks almost every day, two pairs on training days. I wear them with high impact athletic shoes, work/hiking shoes and sometimes heavy work boots. I want them to last (no holes, sagging tops), I want them to be comfortable and I want them to be a fair value for money. So when I was getting rid of my old inventory almost two years ago, I grabbed five different brands of white crew socks. Longevity: When I wore socks, I tried very diligently with the "revolving stock" - pulling socks out of the right side of the drawer, putting the freshly washed ones in the left. In theory, they all wear out about the same. Tipi (2/5): Blossomed quickly at the top - three socks after the first wash; after the third or fourth almost every sock had a loose top. It took me about a year to wear these thick socks before I started noticing holes in my toes or heels. Under Armor (4/5): Some crawl at 8 or 9 months, no holes until second year. The Fruits of the Loom (3/5). ): unravels a little, but by the end of the first year the heels become thinner, which leads to the appearance of holes. Hanes Cushion Crew (3/5): Moderate flowering but moderate toe and heel holes aged 9-12 months. Gold Toe Cotton Crew Athletic (5/5): Outstanding - nothing unraveled so far; two toe holes, one heel hole. Comfort: For me there are two factors: first, softness; second, the thickness/padding. Also, I'm not looking for compression socks (like when I'm flying or when I'm developing CHF) - nothing is (and wasn't) too tight. Tipi (3/5): very thick (for crew socks), well stuffed; hard - even after several months of washing, they seemed almost strengthened. Under Armor (5/5): good thickness; Started out soft, got softer after a few washes. Fruit of the Loom (3/5): a bit thin; good softness. Hanes Cushion Crew (4/5): Good thickness; a bit stiff but not as bad as the wigwam). Gold Toe Cotton Crew Athletic (5/5): Thick but not too thick; the softest of all plastics and only gets better with time. Cost: All purchased same day, no sale prices (Revain standard prices only) Wigwam Super 60 Crew ($2.97 per person) Under Armor Charged Cotton Crew ($2.50 per person) Fruit of the Loom Heavy Duty Crew (1 $.81 per person) Hanes Cushion Crew ($1.78 per person) Gold Toe Cotton Crew Athletic ($1.72 per person)
