I was expecting a relatively quick installation, but it ended up taking 4.5 hours. This was mainly because all the bolts holding the old exhaust in place were stripped off and there was very little room to work. Luckily I was able to use my dremel to cut out some metal and then cut out the screws to get the old fan out, just being careful not to start a fire. This unit is advertised as not requiring attic access and I was able to install it. in this way. You must understand that no screws are supplied to attach to the beam, so you must provide them. There are 3-4 cutouts in the metal box that you screw in to attach to the beam. You will also need to provide a case and flexible band. Finally, make sure you have cable nuts or plugs as these are not included either. For the price of the device, these three elements had to be delivered. (Note: This is a 4" exhaust, if you have a 3" exhaust you will need an adapter). With the old block, installation took just over an hour, and half that time was spent getting the springs. Keep the cap attached to the frame. This part was PITA and the instructions were not clear at all. What finally worked for me was inserting the spring without attaching it to the cap so I could see how it was attached. I then took it off, put it back on the cover and reinstall it. You must be careful not to break the cover when attaching the LED bulb as it is very thin and I am afraid it will break easily. I'm disappointed it wasn't a more durable material as it seems to have come down in price despite being an expensive product. OK, now to the light. Germicidal properties achieved through a partnership with Vital Vio. Some information can be found on the Vital Vio website. I'm a little disappointed with the way they represent UV light in their technical publications. The UV spectrum is listed in the range 100-380nm, the problem is this is not correct. UV light is typically assumed to be 100-400 nm. It is true that some visible light is in the 380-400nm range, but it is still in the UV range. Now that we've solved the range problem, let's talk about UV-A. UV-A is probably best known to you as black light. It has multiple uses, from medicine to entertainment. It is generally considered safe unless it involves higher power (or exposure for too long). The spectrum of black light is 320-400nm. From the technical details I can find I believe this exhaust runs at around 405Nm. There are papers (please google and read) showing that 405nm light kills germs to some extent and is considered safe enough to be used continuously. So I think light might be of some use. They are usually eight to nine feet from ceiling to floor. The manual says it works best within five feet of the device. This isn't a powerful lamp so it won't kill or cover everything in your bathroom, but should help provide some level of protection with regular cleaning and sanitizing. I think it's generally safe to be in a lighted bathroom. installed in germ mode. I encourage everyone to do their own research to make you feel comfortable about security.
