Take twice the length you need.
The hook and loop are on the same side of the band, making the buckle useless. The length of the Velcro is equal to the length of its unbuttoned and straight position. So a 12-inch strap is really only good for six inches or less if you're packing something. I got them to fill the gap between my headboard and the sides of my bed and they were shorter than expected. But they are strong.
