You did it right!
The only reason I am disappointed with this product is that 95% of new cars now have very thick rear view mirrors and this product is not designed for these type of mirrors. I have a 2017 Jeep Wrangler and it's not working properly, hanging by a "thread" so to speak. So if you have an older machine like 1999 or older then this will probably work just fine.
