Great range extender switches for $

Fan switch just an overview: I have installed four of these smart fan switches so far. GE recently changed the model (new #14287) to have three (not so clear) settings instead of continuous adjustment (aka dimmer). Each position is indicated by the flashing frequency of the LED. No tactile feedback when changing the speed setting. Therefore, you need to pay attention to the flashing light. It can be a learning curve for those who haven't used these switches (GE Z-Wave dimmers) before. Since my latest installations are in a house under construction, I haven't wired them up yet or used them with the Smart Hub. The planned controller hub is a Vera hub. An old style fan switch (GE #12730) controlled the fan speed from zero to 100%. With some fans this was a problem as the motor had to run at a certain RPM/Voltage or the fan would make a whirring noise. But it was easy to adjust the fan speed under Alexa control. For example: Alexa, set the bedroom fan to 40%. I installed two of these switches with a SmartThings controller in combination with Alexa.GE Z-Wave on/off switches: 12722, 12727. They are great for creating smart circuits. I prefer to use a paddle than a toggle, I have installed both. I have found that some types of switches do not match the holes in the faceplate. They can lead in a circuit with multiple switches. GE Z-Wave Dimmer: 14294, 12729 Same comments as above. Also, you may need to educate the end user on how to set up the dimmer. It might not be intuitive, especially the toggle switch. They can lead in a circuit with multiple switches. GE Z-Wave Dimmer: 14289 (Revision January 21, 2019) This is a new smooth finish dimmer model. You touch the surface to turn on/off and drag your finger to dim. Interesting design but I don't think it fits the bill. One press toggles on/off. If you lift your finger and touch the dimmer switch, or just touch it to adjust the light, it goes off! My first install was pretty disappointing. (Change: 06/02/2019) The resident of this house does not like it at all. I plan to replace it soon. GE Z-Wave Add-On: 12723, 12728 These switches are used as part of a 3 or 4 circuit closure. They are NOT standalone switches. They MUST be used in conjunction with one of the above switches (not the fan switch). When converting a three-way circuit from analog to digital, this can be difficult. If you are uncomfortable with this type of work, hire an electrician. And someone who understands how to set those switches. These auxiliary switches require a neutral wire and an auxiliary wire from the main switch (where the load is located) to operate. ALL of the above switches require a neutral wire to function. All of these switches require competent electrical knowledge to install. However, if you are considering converting your home or office to a smart home and want the least amount of conversion hassle and want to get the most out of reusing your existing wiring, this is the best option for your buck. I had no trouble connecting with these couples. When pairing, I recommend adding them one at a time and naming them right away, otherwise it's easy to mix up the location of the switches. Edit 02/09/18 - 14289 Soft dimmer switch only - well the frustration was beyond my patience. This switch will be removed and replaced TODAY. The idea looks cool, but the execution is TERRIBLE. My wife was upset for a long time and my patience was at an end. DO NOT buy this Smooth Dimmer #14289! Every time you touch it, it turns on and off - it's almost impossible to control it like a dimmer. It is best to control the dimming level via Alexa or the app. GE - rethink it!

Pros
  • . The fan controller mirrors your Z-Wave signal from your hub or other Z-Wave devices to extend the range up to 150 feet. The extended signal range increases the range of your home automation to increase your control.
Cons
  • Out of fashion
