I bought this to use when I want to listen to music on my computer with headphones. Before using this device, I used to plug headphones into a port on my desktop speakers, which works fine but just isn't practical. What I wanted and now have is a way to switch from desktop speakers to headphones via the audio setting in the taskbar so I don't have to plug and unplug my headphones. Why, because I'm lazy and want to be able to make changes while keeping my feet up on the desk with the keyboard on my lap. I wasn't sure if this device would do it based on the description but I asked the question and someone confirmed it worked - thanks for what it does. It now shows up in the sound settings as a device, which I could rename to "Headphones" so I can easily switch the output device from the sounds icon in the system tray. In terms of sound, it sounds about the same to me whether the headphones are plugged into a jack socket on the speakers, directly into an output socket on the mainboard or a new jack adapter. It also appears to be a well-made device. I bought a longer cable so it's not braided like the shorter version, but it's a high quality material, soft and flexible. The extra length allowed me to wrap the cable around the base of a monitor stand so it was always easy to access. Very happy with this purchase and have no problem recommending it to anyone planning to use it as I have described.
