Review on πŸ“Έ Rokinon 12mm F2.8 Ultra Wide Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras - NEX and Full Frame Compatible by Michael Hale

Revainrating 5 out of 5

First Impression: Solid build, great images

Just got this and will post a more detailed update later. There are a few immediate clarifications. Firstly, this lens is very durable and is a premium product from an aesthetic point of view. I've seen several reviews elsewhere that have described it as malleable and I totally disagree with that assessment. The lens is smaller than you think, which means it's actually pretty narrow - like the classic Nikon 50mm Ai-S, for example. The focus ring is very smooth and well dampened and has a very large adjustment range. The glass is beautiful and the lens cap has a handy snap function. First thoughts on performance. I was just playing around with it a bit, but you can focus VERY accurately. almost touch your subject. The sharpness seems to be very good. It seems to work fine on the Nikon D750. As mentioned in another review here, you can actually set the aperture with your camera's front wheel if you set the physical aperture ring to f/22 (smallest). And the focus indicator works as it should. Be sure to enter non-CPU lens data into the camera if you want accurate aperture values. It's a bit odd that the non-CPU lens focal length selection on the D750 doesn't include 12mm (I chose 13mm, which was the closest). I doubt it matters much. Maybe that affects the exposure a bit? Probably no. You need to read more to understand what to do with it. Indeed, as you might expect with a full-frame camera, there is a lot of distortion (like fisheye) at the periphery. I also looked at an APS-C camera and a lot of the strongest distortions are not visible on the crop sensor. Image Quality I should give you more feedback later, especially after I get a chance to see what Lightroom is doing for this fix. But I am very excited and so far very happy with this purchase. --- Addendum: I took a few more shots with the D500 crop sensor. This is an excellent lens. I've done some landscapes with it and discovered a Photoshop plugin called Fisheye-Hemi that can correct distortion very effectively with minimal cropping if you need flat horizons. It works much better than lens profile correction as it doesn't distort perspective. I would say that this lens becomes quite versatile with this plugin. A true ultra wide angle lens, not just a special tool. That's what I was hoping for and I definitely recommend it.

Pros
  • Minimum focus distance of only 7.9 inches
Cons
  • Not sure
