Without a charger connected, the battery will eventually discharge to zero volts

Compared to the built-in desulfator, the BatteryMinder operates at a lower frequency and in a narrower frequency range. And unlike the BatteryMinder OBD, it doesn't have an under-voltage cutoff either. Ironically, this means that without an external power supply (e.g. a charger) this device will eventually drop the battery voltage to a level where sulfation will definitely occur. Therefore, the charger needs to be plugged in every time the battery isn't used regularly (which is generally a good idea). But considering the cost of this device *and* the separate charger, it's better to buy a BatteryMinder desulphating charger (e.g. model 1500) for about the same total cost. This means that there is no desulphation while the vehicle is running, but the normal operating voltage is above the point at which sulphation can still occur, so onboard desulphation, which works with the engine running but engine off, can end drain the battery so much that sulfation seems almost pointless.
