Review on πŸ“· Ultimaxx 72mm ND Filter: Dynamic ND2-ND400 Fader Variable Neutral Density Lens Filter - High-Quality Optical Glass by Elmito Yeager

Revainrating 5 out of 5

49mm and 67mm

I bought two filters and I can't split my rating into two different ratings, but they are almost identical, so my rating applies to both. I really don't see how to even rate these filters due to the difference in exposure time between using and not using them, but I didn't notice any degradation in quality with short exposures. However, when I compare two different 30" shutter speeds, one at f/1.8 and the other at f/20, I see exactly the same image quality at 100% zoom, meaning all the blurry noise is coming from my old camera and not from the filters themselves, because 20 should show worse image quality compared to 1.8 if it was caused by the filter. I also didn't notice any color difference between using the filter or not, so the filters seem color correct to be. Then, as my photos show while driving on the road, the filters work as one would expect from ND filters. I didn't notice any glare during daytime use. The build quality seems to be very good. Heavy, no rattling, twisting smoothly, and the carving is very fine. The glass is very good. I have UV filters from Vivitar, Bauer and Tiffen and they are like dust magnets, they cannot be cleaned because the smallest dust particles are statically riveted to them. Ultimaxx filters don't have this problem at all as I never see dust build up on the glass and any dust that falls on it can be blown away. I have to say that compared to my other filters they look quite luxurious, much higher build quality. I also like hard plastic cases with foam inserts. The only thing I wish Ultimaxx would do is put lens caps on these filters as the 67mm filter has a larger outer size so I can't leave the filter on my 10-18mm as I don't have a cap for the have filters . After all, these filters cost between $10 and $15. I had never heard of Ultimaxx before but decided to try this brand even though it didn't have any reviews due to the low price and the product description looked good. I have yet to use them a little more, but I think I've tested them enough to write about them. I give them 5/5 but I don't know how they compare to these $100 filters. They seem very good and I would be interested in future Ultimaxx products like CPL filters.

Pros
  • SPECIAL: The filter retains full control over the depth of field, making it useful for certain special effects.
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
