I was hesitant to buy this due to the poor reviews but it sounded so good I thought I would risk and try anyway. I've just started using this little SmartSift box. By reading reviews, good and bad, I've learned quite a few things without having to learn it the hard way. I'm posting this because I think the subject is getting a bad rap from some users. THE DRAWER IS MADE OF MATERIAL AS GOOD AS ANY CASE. UPDATE: I pulled out the trash can this morning and sifted clean trash from "above". Drawer to rinse it out with a hose. This can be done in the bathroom. When I put it back in place the tray didn't latch properly and wobbled even though I had locked the handle. riddle for me. I fiddled with inserting it into the slots intended for toilet insertion to ensure the handle was securely in place and then the tray snapped into place. IF YOU HAVE A SMALL PROBLEM, YOU DON'T GIVE UP. FIND OUT WHY SOMETHING IS NOT WORKING AND TRY TO FIX IT. THE BOX IS WORTH IT AND MY CATS LOVE IT!1. Ignore the pictures that came with the box to help you assemble it. They are useless and easy to assemble as they only consist of 5 parts: top, bottom, inner bowl, upper container (attached to the bowl but detachable), handle for emptying the bowl and lower drip tray. 2. It's big, but only huge in a small space. This works well in our spacious laundry room/pantry/closet.3. After assembly, initially leave the swing door open until the cat(s) has become accustomed to the box.4. It was clear that you had to turn the knob very slowly. First you need to look inside the box by rotating the tray (you may need a flashlight) to see what happens when you pull the lever forward. You will find that clean crumbs are sifted into the top bin (avoiding clumps). During the sieving, wait until the entire "clean” liter is in the box. However, if the litter no longer flows into the upper bin, YOU HAVE PLACED TOO MANY LITERS OF PAN FOR THE COLLECTION BIN, leaving you with no choice but to dump some of the litter into the lower bin along with clumps. Of course, use less.5. Once you've collected clean bedding in the upper bin, pull the lever all the way FORWARD to dispose of any remaining clumps (some of them fell off while sifting, but they sank into the lower bin). Then move the lever all the way BACK and the litter contained in the upper bin will flow freely back into the pan. MAKE SURE TO CLOSE THE HANDLE, otherwise the cat may bump into the upper container when exiting, causing the bowl to move. 6. The box fits a cat of almost any size, but a very large cat (about 18 pounds or so) takes up so much space that they can't help but do their business at the edge of the tray, which can sometimes be a mess caused. The box is not suitable for really big cats unless you are willing to put up with some messy troubles from time to time. My cat is 14 pounds and I have no problems.7. I've found in reviews that Arm & Hammer's SLIDE cat litter gets rid of "things" that get stuck to the sides or bottom of a quart pan. I just bought some and can't vouch for that statement, although the box swears the stuff slides off rather than sticks. Some people, including Hagen, suggest several ways to get cats to use it. You know your cats, so judge for yourself. As for my two cats, I know it sounds really silly, but I do talk to my cats and show them their new litter box. I continued, glad no one could hear me. However, I didn't push them to use it, just removed the two boxes they were using and they immediately started using the new one. THIS BOX IS NOT 100% FREE BUT REQUIRES VERY LITTLE EFFORT TO USE THE PROPERTY.5
