I got this to transfer all my old tapes from the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's to my computer. I was concerned that those old tapes wouldn't work well with a cheap machine like this, but I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the results. I agree with other reviewers who said the software isn't the best, but yes you can download free software called Audacity that works great. ) and the result is a slight distortion of the final result. With Audacity you just adjust Db with a slider and the result is excellent. You can then go back and remove blank parts at the beginning and end, add cues for individual tracks, edit any noise that may be present, and much more, all of which you can do with this fairly sophisticated free software. The machine itself is fine, easy to use, you can listen to music through headphones. It's USB powered and only needs batteries if you want to play tapes away from your computer and listen through headphones. Someone else said it lets room noise through, but I find it hard to believe. It doesn't have a microphone to pick up the sounds in the room, the music is transmitted via USB. Overall great quality for such a low price, I like to digitize all my music so I can keep it. I would give 5 stars if it had better software.
