I've seen articles claiming it's a waste of money and that a cheaper surge protector / power conditioner can be bought. Unfortunately, I installed it straight away with my new AV and stereo system (which was my first true 5.2 channel system), so I can't say if the performance change is noticeable. The end result for me was to buy a quality surge protector that aesthetically matched my AV gear. I have constant power flicker issues in our area, and while this protects over $7,000 worth of audio and video equipment, it costs $300. So far so good, could be cheaper. could be better but my obsessive compulsive disorder definitely drew me to the looks of this machine as well. The muted blue lights (or bright ones if you want to turn them on) peeking into my living room at night are pretty cool.
