The metal plate on top is very thin and doesn't support much weight. If you're hoping to put your cup/mug/bowl on a rack to keep warm, keep looking. Luckily I bought two units and both plates together were enough to hold a full cup of tea or coffee without bending over. The glass bowl on the unit (now without the plate) is strong enough to fit comfortably in my smaller (6 cup) ceramic teapot. on topic. I'm a little wary of my large (12 cup) coffee carafe, more because it's too big and heavy than it's too heavy to be carried by a glass.
