I have ordered 8 pieces of Prime Line 5mm shelf pins. #U10171 hoping the pin diameter would be suitable for my bookshelf as I already knew 1/4 inch pins would be too thick. I'm lucky because these bars fit perfectly tight. The actual diameter of the pins is 0.1945 inches (4.95 mm), measured with a micrometer: just under 5 mm. They replace plastic pins with a pin diameter of 0.1875 inch. .(4.78mm). The story is that after years of stuffing a small bookshelf with water bottles and soda cans, I finally decided to play it safe and replace the plastic pens with metal pens. But the movable shelves were designed for relaxation. on top of the plastic pegs so there is no lateral "play" and each shelf fits snugly in the space. Make room for the L-shaped pins. Avoid this by fitting the pins upside down, but I don't think it's safe without screwing them to the shelf.
