I think it helps control odors if left on all the time . Couldn't say he didn't do anything for the first 2 weeks. I still don't know how to tell that (no markings on any part of the filter). This is the only air cleaner design that actually looks like a chosen decorative addition with its urn shape and vent louvers - not to mention a cute little bird-like air freshener to perch on (I don't know if I opened it up properly because I wear it). I don't really smell it in the room) I hope it does its job because it's the only thing I would leave in my rooms.
