I read about butter chips and was intrigued by the idea of having real butter that you can spread 24/7. There are probably more practical ways to store butter outside of the fridge, but this old-fashioned butter dish was too pretty to resist. We've had it for a few days and it works GREAT. I followed the website's instructions of letting a stick of butter sit overnight to soften completely, then cut it into 4 cubes and packed in a cloche. The addition of cold water seemed odd, but it didn't ruin the texture or taste. We used about half the oil I put in there and there was no sign of it slipping out. well and tightly packed. It's a beautiful and functional conversation piece on our kitchen table. And it's good and hard; it looks like a high quality work of art. The whole family is madly in love with him. As other reviewers have pointed out, the only downside is that it's now too easy to butter. Everyone! I highly recommend this beautiful and functional tableware.
