Review on 📹 StarTech.com Composite to USB Video Capture: S Video Converter with TWAIN and Mac Support by Robert Corral

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent Twain32 drivers for snapshot management, Mac and Windows 7x64 drivers, Linux support, S-Video and Comp inputs

Excellent product. Windows drivers worked fine on Win7x64. but because of the way things are with DirectX and WDM. A simple driver installer "cannot” easily install this type of device, it requires at least three separate manual setups. or more if you let USB plug-and-play get out of hand. It's tiring. Installation of each recording device driver. tiring. (Afterwards) Twain32 works in Irfanview, Artweaver, XnView and everything I've tried, Twain32 Live Preview and Image Capture uploads a snapshot into the program as you would expect, allows you to choose S-Video or Composite as recording source. Windows Live Movie Maker treats it like a webcam with an audio source and saves clips as .wmv files. It opens dialogs to give you access to the DirectX Decoder/ProcAmp/Image panels for real-time fine-tuning. VLC works with it. Windows GraphEdit works with COM and WDM components. [It doesn't have a >built-in time base corrector<. They cost too much to imagine being in something so small]. So VHS or BetaMax tape recordings have a "floating jelly" effect if you don't take that into account. and get television. Although this is normal for super clean reliable sources. Colors and brightness contrast are adjustable, but the default settings are pretty good. It's a lot of fun when you know what you're getting into, know the trade-offs, and have all the details, information, and drivers "out there". unlike many alternatives. The CDROM comes with Windows exe and MacOS pkg installers. but seriously. Don't expect to just run them and they will work. They're just not for recording devices. (I had this not long ago, I'm not aware of any frame drop stats or any potential long term heat or audio sync issues that come with very long recording sessions). I tested it on a 2007 Mac-mini running 10.6.8 and it installed an Applications installed installer with a separate uninstaller app to uninstall it. The hold was impeccable. Much easier than installing Win7 driver. Files saved in native .mp4 format using Apple's own codecs. The maximum recording resolution is 720x480, I don't think it's suitable for 1080p or 1080i recording. [it is not] for SD or lower recordings. It is the "best" of its kind for SD resolutions and highly compatible with many operating systems and versions. I haven't tested Win10 or the new MacOS (after OSX) and I suspect it won't work on them, too many changes and different requirements.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • Not everything fits
