My German Shepherd/Labrador mix took root very quickly. We lured the pillow in with a dab of peanut butter, and as she licked it and rang the bell, we pushed it out. During the weekdays she used the bell herself all the time. After 3 months you ring the attention bell, which she will still do occasionally, but we always let her walk out the door when it rings. My only complaint is that I can't get it to change the audio from ding dong to something else and leave it (so 4 stars). This is a minor issue and I had an identical issue with a different brand. It was probably the same parts, but still. It's still a good instrument and guests are always mesmerized by their little trick of ringing the bell.
