I have a 2018 Mac Mini with a Dell U2720Q display. I'm using the USB-C cable that came with the display and when I use this cable I have to choose between high resolution - 4K @ 60Hz but USB speed - 2.0 < - Current setting High data transfer speed - USB Speed - 3.1 but 4K@30Hz. I want 4K@60Hz _and_ USB 3.1 to use the 4 USB ports on the display at full USB3 speed. Searching many discussion forums I found that the DisplayPort capabilities should be 1.4 (HBR3) which my Mini has and the connection cable should also support 1.4 (HBR3) and support DP alt mode. The Reddit forum specifically mentioned this cable - Startech TBLT3MM, a TB3 20Gb cable that supports DP Alt mode but doesn't seem to support HBR3. High Resolution The OSD displays DP: 1.4 (HBR2) capability. Dell cable runs 4K @ 60Hz (baud rate shows as HBR2) Startech cable runs 4K @ 30Hz only (baud rate shows as HBR2) USB speed is 2.0 High baud rate OSD menu shows DP capability: 1.4 (HBR3) Dell cable only works at 4K@30Hz (baud rate shown as HBR2) Startech cable only works at 4K@30Hz (connection speed shown as HBR2) USB speed is 3.1. I've tried the same thing with an Intel NUC computer that I also have (running Windows 10 Pro): exactly the same results - I can never get Startech. Cables run at 60 Hz no matter what setting I choose on the display. This is unacceptable. The workaround I use is a TB3 -> DP cable and a USB-A to USB-C cable to connect to the display. Apparent build quality seems good, and the cable isn't as stiff as Dell's USB cable. But it will never run at 60Hz. So there is nothing left but to exchange.
