This iron gets very hot - at the lowest temperature it gets so hot that the tip will eventually burn out. I'm an electrical engineer and I have a soldering iron of exactly the same model that has worked for many years. See photos of both irons set on the coolest setting: left is the new one and right is my old one. Too bad, I really like this design because it heats up quickly and works great. There must be a malfunction in the throttle control lever. Another note: the lighter doesn't work very well. I learned to take a lighter with me to light it up. Despite this issue, this really is the best portable gas iron design out there. If you can keep the tip relatively cool, it will last for years.
