Do you know what's right? Easier, more forgiving "clips" for your mountain bike shoes (in fact, I wear my expensive mountain bike shoes on the "road" too). Anyway, they work and work great. Multiple directions will pull you out of your clips. Moves that are pretty much standard in many "crashes". Now listen carefully. You still need to properly adjust (yes, adjust) the pedals. I "transfer" my pedals to the "easiest" "least stiff" position and work from there. I'm currently using 4 clicks for the "weakest" setting, but if you're worried about running out, use the "slackest" setting or something. And as your cleats and pedals wear out, you may find that you "pop out" too easily and need to tighten them up a bit.
