I don't think this item will work really well although I didn't untangle the paracord that needs to be cut to unroll so let's have no hesitation. I can't get the firestarter to generate enough sparks. You'll have to disassemble the buckle to remove a sliver of metal that presumably serves as an emergency knife (it would fit comfortably on the quarters) and try to rub it against the firesteel between your fingertips, hard enough to create a spark. After about a minute of trying, my fingers were wet and I literally saw a spark. Using a tiny piece of metal is ridiculous - my teeth are sharper. The whistle is an integral part of the buckle. Works, the term "loud" doesn't really apply. Waste of time and money TS.
